Initial Opinion of the Olympia 155CC August 28, 2005

After reading the "less than stellar" reviews of several Fellows and Royal crosscut shedders in the $130 to $200 price range, I decided to purchase an Olympia "Standard Capacity Shredder, Model 155CC, Heavy Duty, Cross-Cut." My decision was based, in part, on the fact that Olympia manufactures shredders costing upwards of $3,000. This is their entry level model. The unit was supplied by BuyOnLineNow, an Amazon partner, which delivered the item in an impressive two days from my placing the order.
The shredder was simple to assemble with only three parts: A heavy duty metal frame that supports the cutting element and a slide-out plastic trash base. The base is ideally sized for a standard size grocery bag, a minor convenience.
Although the product description states that the Olympia is backed by a "3 year warranty on parts and labor and a lifetime warranty on the cutters" no information is in the owner's manual describing the warranty or how/where to obtain service. The owner's manual, excluding the other twelve languages included, is only two side-by-side pages long. Other than telling you to reverse the motor in the event of a jam, very little problem solving material is included.
The product description also states that it has a 10-12 sheet capacity. Initial use with more than five pages of standard weight 8" X 11" paper resulted inevitably in paper jams. Even at five pages, you have to be careful that the paper is inserted so that it will enter the machine without folds. Attempting to use this machine to shred media (CD's, etc.) is not advisable.
Note that my overall rating is based on less than three weeks of use and I downgraded the model for its limited documentation and failure to live up to anything close to the 10-12 sheet capacity it advertises.
