Poor Design and no replacement parts January 3, 2009 I bought the Ativa Dx200D and it stop working after a few weeks. Its idea of heavy duty is two sheets. It cannot take 10 and certainly not 20 (not even napkins). I open it to see the problem. The plastic gear has several of the teeth burned off. I cannot find a replacement. I would not buy this product if it was the only one on the planet.
I would give ZERO star if it was available. Waste of time & money. October 27, 2008 I bought an Ativa AT-DC80W Diamond-Cut Shredder at a local Office Depot because it was the only brand with affordable models they offered. I got a pretty good use out of a $49 Staples MAILMATE shredder (highly recommend) that lasted nearly two years of heavy use, so I didn't mind buying a store-brand. It looked very slick in appearance and claimed to cut 8 sheets at a time. I brought it home and started using it, and it couldn't handle 4 sheets. I used it for three days before it kept getting stuck and eventually stopped working altogether. I tried to fix it myself and tore the sticker over the screw that voided the warranty, so there goes my $80. Please save yourself time and money and buy a reputable brand like Fellowes.
Poor Quality? No, Poor Design. April 9, 2008 Since Office Depot no longer carries this model, this review may be moot, but for those who already own one, it may be useful. I purchased an apparently new, in-the-box, Ativa DX200D 20-sheet cross-cut shredder at Goodwill for $24. When I got it home, it didn't work. So, having little to lose, I opened it up. One of the main motor power leads was unplugged. The spade connector was loose, so I squeezed it a little tighter with pliers, and used needle-nose pliers to plug it back in. I also found that the overheating sensor thermocouple was unplugged, so I plugged that back in, too. It appears that the leads are too short, and when the heavy, shock-mounted motor is jarred in transit, the leads unplug themselves. It seems to work fine, now. It's slower than I would have liked, but it's so heavy-duty, I'm sure it can deal with anything I can throw at it. So if yours doesn't work, open it up and plug the motor back in.
Ativa shredders are junk March 30, 2008 I purchased an Ativa shredder from Office Depot in late January. It failed after about six weeks of use. Quality is very low.
I tried to return it to the store, and even though Ativa is a subsidiary of Office Depot, they insisted that I contact the "manufacturer" for warranty work.
Very disappointed in Office Depot.
